EVE Online : Life Of A Rorqual Pilot.

Updated: Aug 24, 2019

Rorquals take their name from French rorqual, which is derived from the Norwegian word røyrkval, meaning "furrow whale", though in EVE Online a rorqual is no whale, but it is one of the biggest ships in the EVE universe. Most people associate flying a rorqual with long periods of boredom, sitting still and doing stuff all, when it actual fact you are doing so much more than you know.

What does it do?

Capital Industrial Ships bonuses (per skill level):

  • 5% reduction in fuel consumption for Industrial Core

  • 10% bonus to Mining Foreman Links effectiveness when using Industrial Core

  • 20% bonus to Drone hit points and damage

  • 50% bonus to Capital Remote Shield Booster range

Role Bonuses:

  • 90% reduction to effective distance traveled for jump fatigue

  • 90% reduction to effective distance traveled for jump fatigue

  • 200% bonus to Cargo Scanners range

  • 900% bonus to Survey Scanner range

  • Can fit Industrial Core

  • Can attach a Clone Vat Bay

  • Can attach three (3) Warfare Link modules at once

People often come to me and say "you must get bored sitting in a rorq all day" to which I respond "not really, I actually thinks its the best job ever". Why I say this you may ask, well not every job in eve allows you to be so useful and do so much just by sitting still.

I can store clones in my Clone Vat bay so, people can jump to my location from other parts of space, I can give out status boosts to people in the system to help with their resource gathering, I can also crush ore into tiny little cubes to make it easier for transportation and I can transport large quantities of stuff in my ore, ship and fleet bay to be honest I just think the rorqual is the best ship in the game despite the recent changes that people say have killed the usefulness of the rorqual.

Being a rorqual pilot lets me not only help my alliance with almost never ending status boosts but also with its relaxed pace it gives me a chance to catch up on tasks that need getting done or just chill out listen to music, watch a film, finish writing letters, recruit some noobs and working on this blog.

Some people can be put off by the really long skill training they need to do to get close to perfect efficiency in a rorqual. For crushing ore/ice you need to train a book for each type of ore and ice you want to be able to crush and the higher you take each skill the better you are at doing that thing.

Skills for perfect boosts

From level 0 - 5

Leadership V - 6 days 2 hours 27 minutes 24 seconds

Mining Foreman V - 12 days 4 hours 53 minutes 50 seconds

Mining Director V - 30 days 15 hours 37 minutes 53 seconds

Warfare Link Specialist V - 36 days 18 hours 45 minutes 29 seconds

Capital Industrial Ships V - 69 days 2 hours 39 minutes 59 seconds

Cybernetics V - 17 days 18 hours 39 minutes 59 seconds

Is there any danger?

Like most ships, Rorquals can be killed, there have been many stories of people being bumped out of POS shields into the vast empty areas of space where they become vulnerable and able to be tackled. Currently worth two billion ISK for for the hull and very little to not fit, a rorqual loss can be quite the punch to the face.

Earning Income

Wait "how do you make any money?" that's a good question, see in my alliance we are very team orientated and when someone is sacrificing their time giving out much needed boosts instead of participating in other activities that could be bringing in an income, each member from the alliance who joins the fleets makes a donation towards the rorqual pilot for time and fuel costs, this is what we call 'Tipping'.

Some days the tips may be low and other days the tips can be substantial, though it may never be as much isk as going out and ratting (Killing NPCs) everyday but it's an income and its far more rewarding in the fact that I know that I am helping so many others. sure I could go ratting and say stuff it, but I don't enjoy it as much. I'm primarily an industry based character and I have trained my toon for the purpose of helping others and building things.

As far as I am concerned helping others is more than just that it's also me building a bond with my fellow members, thus creating a stronger alliance as a whole. How can anyone say that is not worth sitting in a rorqual for hours on end.

Thus why I tell people that "Flying a rorqual is the best job ever!"
